Today I realized that I probably should not have started this cleanse during the week of Independence Day.
The burgers, fries, and fried chicken... Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.
This is just the second day and I barely made it through lunch.
Then they lit the grill.
That smokey barbecue fragrance filled the house followed by one tray after the other of grilled meats; burgers, hot dogs, ribs, and fish; and I could eat them! Hallelujah! I was allowed 4 oz of meat for each meal. Remember from yesterday...
Every meal must contain:
3 servings (4 oz) protein
1/2 cup of whole grains
2 servings (1cup) of dairy
4 servings (1 teaspoon) of good fat
One glass of wine, once a day
I never liked whole grain pasta because of its grainy texture but I knew that a tiny burger wasn't going to cut it. I made the pasta and added some spinach, tomatoes, mozzarella, relish, peppers, and salsa. I know it sounds gross but mayonnaise doesn't exactly count as a healthy fat. Surprisingly, it was pretty good too!
I know I cheated a little because the bun wasn't a whole grain and it was enough to push me over my quota. But I reasoned that it was okay because I didn't have any protein or grain for breakfast.
Still, my family couldn't believe I was actually eating something healthy and enjoying it! Especially when french fries were an option. While the portions are smaller than I thought I think I might be able to adapt by filling in fruits and veggies. The spinach, for example, tastes better than I imagined and I think that I will continue to add it to salads and sandwiches in the future.
I was really proud of myself!
One of the things that I'll have to do is make a meal plan. I find that if I wait until I'm ready to eat hunger makes me want to reach for something already prepared. Like that fried chicken I mentioned yesterday. Luckily doctoroz.com has a ton of easy to prepare, healthy recipes here.
For the next few days I'm planning to make a list of recipes to try for every meal, for every day, and pick up all the ingredients. In the mean time I'm going to go and continue another new habit I've picked up from this cleanse.
A glass of wine with dinner! I can definitely get used to this.
