"As the actress told the crowd yesterday at the annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon organized by Essence... she didn’t always feel deserving of the attention. In accepting her award for Best Breakthrough Performance, Nyong’o took the opportunity to address her own evolving thoughts about beauty and race."
At the annual Black Woman in Hollywood Luncheon by Essence she shared a little about how she saw herself as a child.
Looking at her, there's no denying that this is a beautiful woman. I couldn't believe when she shared that she didn't always see herself as beautiful. That as a child she hoped for a lighter complexion, because she was teased by her peers.
Unfortunately, in our culture, portrayal of this shade of beauty is rare. Especially on the scale that Nyong’o has hit the beauty/ fashion/ media world. In her speech she mentions finally finding inspiration from Alek Wek. Seeing a woman who people said was beautiful that "looked so much like" her in the media changed the way she saw herself. We're all lucky for that!
Lupita Nyong’o is a role model to all of us. A lamp that has broken through the darkness declaring that beauty is more than a fair completion but also talent and a beautiful spirit.
Technically, I'm not a "young girl" anymore but you've inspired me too Lupita!
