Aligning Values For Personal & Professional Success
"You gotta do what you gotta do to get ahead in this world. It's not wrong, it's just the way things are." I remember sitting and listening to an "elder" in my industry explain the commonly accepted procedure for making money on initially low-bid contracts - basically look for the holes and make money on the change orders.
Here I was, thinking it was our job to provide exceptional service to those who hired us. Judging by the laughter that followed my apparently naive statement, I was sorely mistaken.
Do you struggle to reconcile your faith-focused values with the cut-throat work environment that surrounds you?
The thing is, while popular opinion might say that separating your beliefs from your work is crucial to success, aligning your values with your work is absolutely crucial to achieving BOTH personal and professional success. Fulfillment and satisfaction in your work overflow in your life...so does soul-sucking emptiness and dissatisfaction.
Aligning Your Authenticity and Faith
"Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we're supposed to be and embracing who we are." - Brené Brown.
In the pursuit of professional success, you might have experienced the need to suppress or hide your true self. Some work environments often demand an aggressive, winner-takes-all mentality, which might feel at odds with your Faith-focused values.
However, recognizing that there is power in authenticity and vulnerability can be the catalyst to align your values and successfully overcome these challenges.
Here are a few tips for how you can overcome the challenges you face, gain confidence in your decision-making, and build meaningful success in your career and life.
Seek Mastery
Cultivate a mindset of continuous improvement in your personal and professional life. Focus on strengthening your relationships with your family, colleagues, and other like-minded women. Look for opportunities to grow and collaborate.
Work on understanding and embracing your worth as a unique individual. Take time to reflect on who you truly are, and what your values and passions are. This sense of self will give you clarity and an unwavering foundation that you can build your personal and professional success on.
Cultivate Gratitude
In moments of stress and burnout, make a habit of practicing gratitude daily. Identify the aspects of your life, both personal and professional, for which you are thankful. This will infuse you with a positive mindset, allowing you to see opportunities where others might see barriers.
Nurturing Relationships with Like-Minded Women
As you navigate your career, especially in male-dominated industries, you might encounter moments where you feel isolated and unsupported. Building connections and meaningful relationships with other like-minded women is essential to your well-being and professional growth.
Seek out communities, online forums, and networking events where you can engage with other professional women who share your values, passions, and interests. These connections can offer you resources, friendship, and a support system that can transform your life.
Share Your Struggles and Triumphs
Open up about your experiences and challenges, and seek advice and encouragement from those who understand your journey. Allow yourself to be vulnerable, and let the bonds of sisterhood empower you.
I know this one can be a tough one, made more difficult in our industries where sometimes we're taught to show no weakness, judged for having emotions, or seen as weak if we don't conform to certain norms. So, having the right space with the right people where you can be vulnerable is the key here.
I've found that with the right support behind the scenes I cared increasingly less about the opinions and judgments of others in my field, and it gave me the strength to hold my ground no matter the consequences. Sometimes that resilience in the face of opposition was surprisingly the thing that afforded me increased respect.
Achieving Success on Your Terms
Blending values with professional success is not only achievable, but it also generates a deeper sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in your life. By letting go of limiting beliefs and embracing your unique strengths, you can blaze your own path, leading to personal and professional success.
More and more, you'll hear me say that it's not always about finding a seat at the table; sometimes you have to build your own table.
Innovation creates space for new ideas, and that leads to growth and further innovation. The less time I spent trying to fit in, the more I was able to see opportunities where my unique talents and abilities made room for themself.
Confront and Embrace Fear
Take time to understand the source of your fears, reframe them as opportunities, and overcome analysis paralysis by taking massive action. This will help you build your confidence and push you towards achieving your goals.
Believe in your ability to succeed and take proactive steps towards your goals. When faced with decisions, trust in your values as a guiding compass, ensuring your actions align with your inner beliefs and principles.
Aligning your values with your professional life doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your success or compromise your well-being. By leaning into your faith, focusing on self-discovery and growth, and building connections, you can create a life in which personal and professional fulfillment are united.
The world is full of opportunities for the brilliance you bring to it!
