Summer Sun and Bug Protection Tips
Summer’s here — and whether you're working long hours, catching up on your goals, or making time for fun in the sun, your skin still deserves protection and care.
As I often say in coaching, confidence isn’t something you fake — it’s something you build. And that starts with how you care for yourself. Today, I’m sharing a few skin-protecting, confidence-boosting tips to help you step into summer with ease.
Let’s Debunk a Few SPF Myths:
“When should you use SPF?” EVERY DAY
SPF is not just for sunny summer days when you’re outside at the beach, barbecue, gardening, etc. Even on cold, cloudy, or rainy days, these damaging rays can pass through clouds and even windows when you’re indoors.
It’s something you want to use daily to protect yourself from UVA & UVB rays that come from the sun. So as long as it’s daytime where you are, even if you’re not outside as long as you're in a place with windows you’re being exposed to UVA & UVB rays.
“You don’t need sunscreen if you’re brown skinned.” FALSE
“You don’t need SPF if you don’t burn” ALSO FALSE
Long story short, UVA and UVB rays can damage the skin on a cellular level which can cause cancers and or premature aging. They don’t care what skin color you are or whether or not your skin is prone to burn or tan.
While it’s true that people who burn more easily are at a higher risk for damage from these rays, anyone can get skin cancer. Meaning, anyone benefits from protection.
“Chemical sunscreens irritate my skin - I can’t use it” There’s Still Hope
If you’re sensitive to chemical sunscreens, try mineral sunscreens which are often more gentle on sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the UV rays into non-damaging heat and then releasing it from the skin. That’s why you should wait at least 15 minutes after applying chemical sunscreens before going into the sun, to give your skin time to absorb it.
But, mineral sunscreens sit on the skin’s surface, forming a barrier on the skin and reflecting the UV rays away from you. It’s great for people with sensitive skin or kids. They’re available for both face and body
3 things to remember:
Use SPF 50+ for better coverage, especially in the summer months.
Follow the "rule of 3" — three lines of sunscreen down your 3 fingers (or 1/4 tsp) for your face and neck. Don’t forget your ears! For body, use about 2 tablespoons.
Reapply regularly if you're outside, sweating, or swimming.
Products I Personally Love
I like skincare that multitasks — products that moisturize, protect, and support my skin all in one. These are a few go-tos:
Anew Hydra Fusion SPF – Hydrating protection that wears well under makeup
Anew Solaire – Smooths and brightens with niacinamide — my skin loves it
Avon Sun+ Natural Mineral Sunscreen – A gentle mineral option for the face or body.
Bonus Tip: My Favorite Skincare Duo
Speaking of protection, the OG dynamic duo is to use Vitamin C with your sunblock. The vitamin C is an antioxidant, so it helps block free radicals that also cause damage to your skin. When paired with sunblock, you get that one-two punch of knockout protection.
Anew Vitamin C has an amazing Brightening Serum that I use on my face which isn’t greasy and absorbs fast, so my face doesn’t feel heavy. There’s also a Vitamin C Illuminating Body Serum that gives my legs the most natural glow which is great all summer - from traveling in the city to barbecues to the beach.
Anew Vitamin C Brightening Serum – Lightweight, fast-absorbing, and non-greasy for daily glow
Vitamin C Body Serum – Gives your legs a gorgeous glow that’s perfect for everything from city strolls to weekend cookouts
Don’t Forget Bug Protection
Speaking of barbecue and beach protection. You definitely don’t want to forget the bug protection.
Skin So Soft Bug Guard is one of the most popular DEET-free insect repellant lines. The Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Expedition line (green bottles) also includes added sun protection and is available in water-resistant formulas for beach and pool days (white tube).
At night or when we’re in an area with biting black flies we use the Bug Guard Plus Picardin (silver bottles)
My family keeps Bug Guard all over our yard, in our cars, and we always have minis stocked for travel so we don’t have to worry even when we’re on the go.
Here’s what I use:
Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Expedition (Green Bottle) – Includes SPF and water resistance — perfect for pool days or beach hangs
Bug Guard Plus Picardin (Silver Bottle) – Great for black flies and nighttime protection
